The revered Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine is representative of Fujiyoshida. Fuji Otorii, the majestic gateway to Mt. Fuji, is Japan's tallest wooden "torii" gateway. Five sacred trees, including the 1,000-year-old Fuji Taro Cedar and Couple Cypress, tower above the shrine grounds, giving visitors a sense of the shrine’s mystical nature and magnificent history. The main shrine, built by Naritsugu Torii, the first lord of the Yamura clan, a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is among the 11 buildings on these grounds that have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. Visitors can learn about the relationship between the worship of Mt. Fuji and the "oshi" (Shinto priest) at the Oshi (Former Togawa Family Residence) in the city.
