Lake Ashi & Hakone Shrine

Photo of the Lake Ashi & Hakone Shrine

Lake Ashi, the symbol of Hakone, was formed about 3,000 years ago when the eruption of Mount Kamiyama at the central summit of volcanic Mount Hakone produced lava flows and volcanic rock that choked the Hayakawa River. A fantastic view is captured by photographing Hakone Shrine from the opposite shore of Lake Ashinoko at sunset.
