Oyama Senmaida

Located in Kamogawa City, the Oyama Senmaida composed of 375 rice terraces have produced high-quality Nagamasa rice since pre Edo-period. Although the aging of the agricultural workforce has accelerated the decline of farming communities, the Oyama rice terraces garnered nationwide attention through the adoption of a unique rice field ownership system that helped it succeed in farmland maintenance through interaction with city dwellers. In 1999, it was selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Terraced Rice Fields, and designated as an area for the Cultural Landscape Preservation and Utilization Project by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan.
