Tanjoh-ji
Tanjoh-ji was originally built in 1276 at the birthplace of Nichiren Shonin, however as it experienced massive earthquakes and tsunami twice, the temple was relocated to where it stands now. Various temple halls were burned during the great fire of 1758, however the one and only structure, the Nio-mon Gate built in 1706 remained intact, and later was designated as a Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property as the largest of its kind in the prefecture. What’s more, the temple preserves valuable cultural properties, including the authentic handwritten letter “Letter to lady Tokidono” by Nichiren Shonin, and two wooden seated statues of Nichiren Shonin from the medieval period.
