DAY1 TOKYO

TRIP PLAN

In this journey, you’ll stroll around Ueno known for its numerous tourist attractions, and Ariake, an area where many Olympics legacy spots can be found. In the Ueno area, must-see spots are the commemorative plaque for the Olympic torch lighting ceremony atop the roof of the Taito City Office, and the famous Ameyoko Shopping Street, which grew from a post-war black market, to today’s home to over 400 shops. The Ariake area includes Tokyo Big Sight, Japan’s largest international exhibition center, which served as a media hub during the Olympics, and right next to it is the Stone & Light Plaza, a square serving as a hub for people to gather, plus the first hydrogen-fueled cauldron in the Games’ history.

AmeYoko Shopping Street
Ameyoko is one of Japan’s leading shopping areas, with over 400 stores lining a roughly 500-meter stretch between Ueno and Okachimachi Stations. It began as a black market developed from a community of some 400 soldiers returning home from Manchuria after the war. The two rival theories as to where its name came from are that it’s either a shortened version of Ameya Yokocho (candy shop alley) or America Yokocho (American alley). The street is known for its year-end bustle, and is beloved as a maze-like shopping street where specialty shops dealing in rare and valuable items gather.

Various temple halls were burned during the great fire of 1758, however the one and only structure, the Nio-mon Gate built in 1706 remained intact, and later was designated as a Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property as the largest of its kind in the prefecture. What’s more, the temple preserves valuable cultural properties, including the authentic handwritten letter “Letter to lady Tokidono” by Nichiren Shonin, and two wooden seated statues of Nichiren Shonin from the medieval period.

Fans by Ota-ya
Ota-ya, a long-established fan maker that originated from Edo-style fans, moved to the Boso Area due to the war, and the fourth-generation owner Mitsue Ota now carries on the tradition of Boso fans. Fans originated in ancient China and were introduced to Japan, where they were used for cooling and as decorative items from the Nara period onward. During the Edo period, technological advancements led to their widespread adoption among commoners, with fans featuring designs by Ukiyoe artists called “uchiwa-e” becoming especially popular. Bamboo from the Boshu region of Chiba Prefecture proved ideal for fan ribs. After the Great Kanto Earthquake, Edo artisans relocated to the Funagata area, establishing Boshu as a center for uchiwa fan production.
